City of Gulf Breeze Responds to FDOT Letter on Green Crosswalk Markings
Gulf Breeze, Fla. — The City of Gulf Breeze has received a letter from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding the use of green pavement markings on raised crosswalks along our multi-use path. The city has been given until September 4, 2025, to remove the paint.
Mayor JB Schluter had this to say, “The City is currently drafting a technical response outlining how these raised speed tables with green markings comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). At the same time, the City has communicated to FDOT that it intends to comply with state requirements. A final decision on next steps has not yet been made.”
“Further, the City’s sole reason for using green traffic paint was to enhance visibility and safety for pedestrians, children, and cyclists. The green paint was used only as a supplement to the required high-visibility white striping, not as a substitute.”
Even if the green paint is removed, the City’s multi-use path crosswalks will continue to feature strong safety protections, including bold white striping and raised crosswalks, which make pedestrians more visible to drivers.
Last February 2024, the project received a national Engineering Excellence Award for its innovative design, which connects schools, parks, and civic areas with safe, walkable routes. Green pavement markings are recognized by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for use in certain scenarios, such as to identify bicycle lanes and shared-use paths across turning lanes. Green pavement markings have become increasingly popular across the county and northwest Florida and have become generally recognizable to motorists.
The City will continue working with FDOT in good faith, with public safety as the top priority.
